My nails have been weak and brittle since I can remember. I’ve worn artificial nails since high school, which was long before it became either popular or commonplace. In my experience with a lot of older relatives, fingernails get worse and worse looking as we age, and mine have been no different. I learned a long time ago to do my own artificial nails. It never cost me much but time and then I just got tired of doing them. I was getting used to them being unattractive and kind of crappy-looking. Then one day, it occurred to me that it was possible that they didn’t have to look so bad. I checked my normal references and found what I wanted. For two weeks I applied the oil I made at least twice a day, sometimes three times — about a drop on each nail. They were improving. They were growing nicely and started looking healthier. I started to use the oil only once a day and a month later, they were still looking good. I don’t want them long, but they are stronger and could be. Having nails that look nice without being covered with tips and acrylic is amazing for me after nearly 50 years. Here’s the recipe:
- 1 oz. fractionated coconut oil
- 3 drops melaleuca oil
- 3 drops rosemary oil
- 3 drops lavender oil
- 3 drops lemon oil
Put in an amber or dark blue glass bottle with a dropper plug top and shake gently to mix. Apply a drop to each nail and massage into each nail and the surrounding tissue twice daily until nails show signs of improvement. If you paint your nails, be sure to buff off oil that remains and use a cotton swab with rubbing alcohol on it to clean off your nails. Paint them as you usually would. Wait until the next day and continue to apply a small drop of oil on the tissue around each nail daily, massaging into the skin.
