Anxiety Reduction

by BB Curtis

Our lifestyles these days seem to scream, “ANXIETY!”  We are pushed and prodded to do more in less time and with fewer resources.  Departments that used to be made up of 12 people have been stripped down to two or three with expectations of greater and greater output – generally beyond the capabilities of any mere mortals.  Possibly, if we never slept again, had several clones, and had access to a few billion dollars, we could meet some expectations from our jobs and families.  It’s hard to say.  The expectations become more and more outrageous.  When working under the stresses to which we have become subject, we find ourselves worn thin, not on our games, unable to rest well enough to even remotely return to normalcy, scattered, and crotchety — and these are the least of all the negatives even before one begins to consider what all this is doing to our bodies on a non-visible level.

There are many ways to handle anxiety that comes with these types of bad stress (yes, there is such a thing as good stress):  relaxation therapies, drugs, yoga, breathing exercises, smoking, meditation,  Tai Chi, massage, alcoholic beverages, and more.  Some of us are so stressed that we require combinations of therapies to step down a few rungs on the nervous tension ladder.  Oils can be a great resource when anxiety is a large nasty.  My favorite blend is:

  • 5 drops lavender oil
  • 3 drops ylang ylang oil
  • 2 drops bergamot oil

added to 1/4 cup of grapeseed oil and stored in sterilized amber or cobalt blue bottles, dated and labeled.  The mixture should be applied (2 or 3 drops) to the bottoms of the feet at bedtime and can be massaged into the temples (one drop) several times a day as needed.

An excellent deep relaxation oil is:

  • 6 parts lavender oil
  • 2 parts marjoram oil
  • 1 part mandarin oil

in a diffuser – for use especially for meditation and/or at bedtime.

Also:

several drops of cardamom oil in a diffuser a few times a day can help one feel less burdened and weighed down.
